Trying to get rid of mosquitoes swarming outside your home or business? Tired of the bites, itching, and inflammation? Worried about these pests spreading disease?
There are plenty of good reasons to keep mosquitoes away from yourself, your family, and your staff and customers. For systemic pest control treatment that addresses the underlying causes of mosquitoes, working with a professional is your best bet.
But can pest control really repel mosquitoes? And how do these professionals identify, assess, and remove this threat? Let’s take a closer look, starting with a brief overview of the insect itself.
Understanding Mosquitoes as a Pest and Source of Disease
Mosquitoes are common across much of the US and much of the world as well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out two major reasons why mosquitoes aren’t welcomed by most people:
- Mosquitoes that bite (and not all species of mosquitoes do) tend to cause bothersome itching and swelling. Scratching those bites can lead to infection and more potential health issues.
- Mosquitoes can easily spread disease through their bites. Just a few infected mosquitoes can be the source of a disease outbreak.
A few qualities make mosquitoes especially effective pests, unfortunately. They’re very quiet and hard to notice, except in very quiet and still environments. You may not even feel them bite, only noticing their attack on you once it starts to itch and become inflamed.
Why Don’t We Try to Exterminate All Mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes play important roles in a variety of ecosystems. That’s true despite all the issues they can cause people and many types of animals. They serve as pollinators. Mosquitoes are an important source of food for a wide range of animals as well.
However, the National Wildlife Federation reminds us that very few plants and animals rely only on mosquitoes for pollination or food. In other words, it’s perfectly fine to exterminate the mosquitoes around your home or business. It’s just not a good idea to get rid of all of them.
Can Professional Pest Control Services Exterminate Mosquitoes?
Yes!
Qualified, experienced, and effective pest control companies know how to deal with mosquitoes. While these pests are determined and often appear in large numbers, advanced mosquito exterminators know how to deal with them.
At Wingman Pest Control, we have a specific strategy for keeping mosquitoes away all season long. A combination of careful site review, easily changed environmental factors, and safe and effective treatments all come into play.
How Do Exterminators Get Rid of Mosquitoes?
On a practical level, it’s impossible to remove or eliminate every single mosquito in a given area. Mosquitoes lay very small eggs and can use very small pools of stagnant water to do so. Complete and total elimination of mosquitoes isn’t possible without expensive and widespread treatments.
That said, it’s entirely possible to substantially reduce the mosquito population near your home or business. That means a much lower chance of being bitten or being exposed to disease by a mosquito.
Identifying and removing sources of still water is a key step. The EPA’s advice for eliminating mosquito habitats all centers on eliminating standing water.
The Power of Mosquito Buckets
In some cases, we’ll use mosquito buckets and turn these pests’ affinity for water against them. These buckets prevent mosquitoes by spreading a fungus to them (harmless to us, dangerous to them). The mosquito will likely visit other egg-laying sites, also spreading the fungus to those areas — and other mosquitoes.
At the same time, these buckets trap and destroy eggs laid by female mosquitoes. It’s two types of mosquito control techniques offered by the same treatment.
